For communities where an open casket funeral takes place embalming the deceased easy the
mind of the family members. Since funeral is the last appearance of departed
person it is vital that he/ she looks natural. The embalmers take a number of preliminary actions before
introducing the embalming fluid into
the dead body.
Here are the initial steps followed by embalming
service in India -
1. Facial
groundwork –
The body is laid supine; the face is kept upwards
during the entire process. The face is disinfected and features are cleaned
both from inside and outside. If the face has injuries surgery is done to set
the features.
The eyes are closed with the eyeballs in the middle.
In some case of the eyes sink which result in distorted eyelids; small cotton
balls are placed to give a spherical appearance.
Eyes and mouth are closed. Glue is used to shut the
eyes if they don’t.
If the mouth does not close naturally it needs to be
set. Either a surgical suture or an injector gun is used to sew the jaw and the
upper part.
At last, a
little amount of cream is dabbled on the eyelids, lips and nostrils to
moisturize them.
2. Body
groundwork –
Clothing is removed. The cuts, injuries, patches and
discolouration of the embalming body
are recorded in a document. It is utilized for deciding the type of embalming to be performed. This record acts as a
protection to the funeral home if the family reports any false claims against
the procedure.
The body is shaved to remove the hairs.
Subsequently, it is massaged to remove the stiffness and loosen the muscles
that become firm due to the rigour mortis.
